The Christian Response to Injustice
Psalm 37v1-11
Part 6 - Psalm 37v11
6th February 2026
This is the last in our series on the question of how Christian people should react to all the injustice we see in this world, on the global stage, in our country, in our own lives and in the lives of those around us. There is no doubt that a great deal of injustice is perpetrated against nations, people groups and individuals. There is no doubt that it is deeply painful to suffer or to witness witness unkindness, cruelty, fraud, violence and other manifestations of sin, hatred and indifference. We must take care of our own emotional state:
Proverbs 4v23
Above all, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
If we don't care for our emotions, we'll hurt ourselves, and we'll be tempted to sin against others. We may even be tempted to doubt God's love, His power or His wisdom.
Last time, we finished with a brief look at:
Psalm 37v9-10
A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look for them, they will not be found.
That thought continues with these words:
Psalm 37v11
But the meek will inherit the land
and enjoy great peace.
Jesus quotes this verse in Matthew 5v5, which both the NIV and the ESV translate as "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." Both the Hebrew word "'eres" and the Greek word "ge" mean both "earth" and "land" so the translators have to make choice of which English word to use in each instance of these words.
I said in our study of verse 3 that the Old Covenant is about land, and the New Covenant is about the kingdom of God, and I stand by that. Our greatest inheritance is eternal life in heaven with Jesus. Nevertheless, Jesus also promises that "the meek⦠will inherit the earth." The church is growing, and I believe that it will continue to grow, and as Numbers 14v21 says, "All the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord".
When we're troubled by profound injustice, when we see evil people prosper while good people suffer, when we see false religion grow while the church is persecuted, we can find some consolation in our certain knowledge that God has a plan, that He is working out that plan every day, that He is always in control, and that the day will come when we, the church, inherit the earth. We can also rejoice that:
Philippians 2v9-11
... God exalted him [Jesus] to the highest place and gave him the
name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on
earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father.
The meek will inherit the earth. The key to a successful and peaceful Christian life is is meekness. Cultivate meekness. Meekness is submission to God. As we've read in this Psalm:
- Don't fret because of evil men
- Don't be envious of those who do wrong;
- Don't fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
- Don't get angry
Instead,
- Trust in the Lord
- Do good
- Take delight in the Lord,
- Commit your way to the Lord;
- Trust in him
- Be still before the Lord
- Wait patiently for him
Please consider this as a way of life. Please choose to do these things. Then the church will inherit the earth and, verse 11 promises, you and I will enjoy great peace.
Are you prepared to let God do what God does? He is the Judge of all the Earth. We're not. As Genesis 18:25 says, "Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?" Yes He will!
