The Healing at the Pool

Part 3

John 5v15-17

Over the last two weeks, we've been thinking about John 5v1-14, in which Jesus heals a man who had been an invalid for 38 years, and who couldn't walk. Jesus told him to pick up his mat and walk, and he did! Then Jesus warned him to stop sinning, because there are worse things than physical illness; there's eternal destruction for those who do refuse to turn from their sin and submit to God.

We now read:

John 15-17
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him.
Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working."

God is at work every day, including the Sabbath. Every day, people are saved from their sins. Every day, people are healed of their diseases. Every day, miracles are performed. Every day, relationships are restored. Do you see these things happening? If not, maybe you're looking in the wrong places, or maybe you're not looking. God hasn't changed. God healed people in the Old Testament, and he healed people in the New Testament, and He heals people today. It's amazing how many people deny this. There's plenty of evidence around. But we don't see what we don't expect to see.

Thank God He still heals people today! Thank God he still cares!

There is hope for us - because God is always at his work to this very day. God has unlimited power and unlimited love. And He always will.

The Jews persecuted Jesus for healing on the Sabbath, but Jesus heals on EVERY Sabbath, and every other day of the week! How tragic it is that the religious authorities of the day were more concerned about their ideas of religious observance than about the amazing power and love of God.

Do we limit God by our own ideas about what should and shouldn't happen on Sunday, or in church? Do we see little of His power and love at work because we don't believe that he wants to save and heal?

We can't tell God what He may or may not do. We can't tell Him how to do it or when to do it. We can refuse to see God's work when it happens. Or we can put our trust in Him and let Him do what He knows is best.

We can pray, "Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven".
